Rock Crevice
Etching on paper
(size)
I’ve had only a brief opportunity to experiment with etching, and found it a fascinating process. There are many methods to achieve texture, and the rewards for experimentation are often unexpected and random. This is very suitable for evoking the surfaces of natural forms, where a certain amount of applied chaos appears more descriptive to the eye than an effort to draw every bit of texture one sees.
Included here below is an ink drawing i made a couple years prior to the etching. In the drawing I was concerned mainly with the form of the rocks. while in the etching above, I found a way into the character of those rock formations through eroding the copper plate in layers, with different processes, mimicking the erosion that created the texture of the rocks themselves.
